Keep Maine Beautiful

Our team

The people building this.

Keep Maine Beautiful is early, and small, and honest about both. These are the people who have said yes so far.

Karen O. Andrei

Founder & Executive Director

Old Orchard Beach

Karen founded Keep Maine Beautiful and serves as its Executive Director. Born in Alabama into an Air Force family, she landed in Brewer at thirteen and has been claiming Maine ever since — fifteen years at AT&T, then twenty-four years at MaineHealth, where she is Director of Business Standardization. She raised her daughter here and built her career here. She retires from MaineHealth in spring 2027 to lead this work full-time. Keep Maine Beautiful is her retirement, and her calling.

I wasn't born in Maine, but after visiting often as a kid, I fell in love with it and made it home at 17. Give me salty ocean air, quaint towns, mountain trails, winding back roads, blueberry everything, and I'll be happy. I love that Maine somehow packs rocky coastlines, rolling farmland, cozy downtowns with cobblestone streets, and endless hiking into one incredible state. I'll happily plan my day around a scenic view and my evening around where to get the best meal. And because this state has given me so much, I'm passionate about giving back and helping preserve what makes Maine so special for generations to come.

Formerly Farmington and Portland

My love for Maine began when I attended college at the University of Maine at Farmington back in 2016, and after spending time away after graduation, I eventually found my way back to Portland. While life has again brought me away from Maine, the love and connection I feel for the state has not changed. Maine’s incredibly preserved landscapes, generous and welcoming communities, and natural beauty continue to inspire me. I’m excited to help share in the effort to Keep Maine Beautiful.

Maine has been my home since I was a young child. I’ve lived in both Belfast and Portland and have spent years exploring the state from end to end, from busy city streets to quiet back roads. Photography has been a lifelong passion, and I’m drawn to both the urban and rural sides of Maine: working harbors, Katahdin in its fall colors, wildlife, and the farm country in between. Over the years, I’ve built a large collection of images that capture the beauty and variety of this remarkable place. I’ve always taken photos for my own enjoyment and to share with family and friends. As the founding photographer for Keep Maine Beautiful, I’m proud to share that collection more widely, and to help show why these places are worth caring for and protecting.

Board of Directors

Governing this

The board is independent of the team and is being seated now. Directors serve two-year terms, without compensation. The board elects its own officers.

Michelle Whittemore

Michelle Whittemore

Director

Gorham

Michelle Whittemore has spent her twenty-three-year career in Maine's non-profit hospitals, working her way up from an entry-level role in Bangor to Senior Director of Health Information Management at MaineHealth — work she cares about because it means protecting patients' privacy and the accuracy of their care. She lives in Gorham with her husband and their two kids, and spends a lot of weekends on Maine's back roads and campgrounds with the family camper.

“I wanted to put my energy toward something that builds pride in this place rather than just pointing out what's wrong with it.”

We need at least one more director, and there is room for up to five on the board. If you love Maine and want to help guide what comes next, we would like to hear from you.

I’m interested and would like to learn more →

Everyone has a role, and every small act of care is an act of ownership.

There is room here. If you want to be part of it, join the Crew.
